Battery Provisioning and Associated Costs for Data Center Power Capping

چکیده
Power over-subscription can reduce costs for modern data centers. However, designing the power infrastructure for a lower operating power point than the aggregated peak power of all servers requires dynamic techniques to avoid high peak power costs and, even worse, tripping circuit breakers. This work presents an architecture for distributed per-server UPSs that stores energy during low activity periods and uses this energy during power spikes. This work advocates explicit sizing of the distributed UPS batteries for power capping and provides a methodology to properly select the properties of the battery in order to reduce total datacenter cost of ownership per server. Depending on workload diurnal patterns and oversubscription assumption this approach can achieve up 5-10% reduction in overall costs per server.

Joulemeter: Virtual Machine Power Measurement and Management
The importance of power management has led to most new servers providing power usage measurement in hardware and alternate solutions exist for older servers using circuit and outlet level measurements. However, the power measurement and management capability is severely handicapped when the servers are virtualized because virtual machine (VM) power cannot be measured purely in hardware. We pres...
متن کاملAutomatic Server to Circuit Mapping with The Red Pills
As fine grained power monitoring becomes crucial in data centers, a challenge raises on how to correctly map server identities to power circuits. Power provisioning, power capping, and power tracking all depend on accurately accounting which server consumes power from which circuit. Manual survey is cumbersome and error prone. We describe a solution, called Red Pill, that can systematically and...
متن کاملDynamic Server Provisioning for Data Center Power Management
Data centers play an important role in today’s IT infrastructure. However, their enormous power consumption makes them very expensive to operate. Sadly, much of the power used by data centers is wasted because of poor capacity management, leading to low server utilization. In order to reduce data center power consumption, researchers have proposed several dynamic server provisioning approaches....

This paper presents WattValet, an efficient solution to reduce data center peak power consumption by using heterogeneous energy storage. We henceforth call an energy storage device, a battery, with the understanding that the discussion applies to other devices as well such as pumped hydraulic and thermal systems. Previous work on energy storage management in data centers often ignores or undere...
متن کاملHierarchical and hybrid energy storage devices in data centers: Architecture, control and provisioning
Recently, a new approach has been introduced that leverages and over-provisions energy storage devices (ESDs) in data centers for performing power capping and facilitating capex/opex reductions, without performance overhead. To fully realize the potential benefits of the hierarchical ESD structure, we propose a comprehensive design, control, and provisioning framework including (i) designing po...
